Cemetery Regulations

What’s Allowed at Rose Hills

Rose Hills accommodates a range of memorial styles, but the type and size you can choose depends on the section of the park where your loved one rests. The primary memorial across Rose Hills is the flat granite marker, flush set into the lawn. Upright monuments are permitted only in select sections, including Family Estates, and require prior approval from the cemetery. Below are the nine flat granite sizes Rose Hills accepts.

Baby Marker 18″ × 9″

The smallest flat granite marker permitted at Rose Hills. Designed for infant and cremation spaces.

Single 24″ × 12″

A single marker with room for one name, dates, and a small design element.

Single 28″ × 16″

A mid size single marker with enough room for a name, dates, a short inscription, and artwork such as a portrait or scene. The most popular flat marker size at Rose Hills.

Standard 32″ × 20″

A larger single or double marker offering generous space for detailed artwork, color portraits, and longer inscriptions.

Companion 44″ × 14″

A narrow companion marker spanning two adjacent spaces. Room for two names, dates, and a shared design across the center.

Companion 56″ × 16″

A wider companion marker with more depth for elaborate shared artwork, dual portraits, or detailed scenes between the two names.

Half Ledger 24″ × 30″

A half ledger for a single space, deeper front to back than it is wide. Gives a generous canvas for artwork and inscriptions.

Half Ledger 30″ × 39″

A wide half ledger with room for two names, full scenes, and the kind of detail usually reserved for upright monuments.

Full Ledger 32″ × 72″

An unusual size that covers the full length of a grave space. This is not a standard order, please call us for more information and availability.

Rose Hills limits granite colors to a select palette. The five colors currently accepted are shown below. Additional colors may be approved on a case by case basis, ask us and we’ll check with the cemetery.

Allowed marker types and sizes vary by section. Not sure what your section permits? Give us a call and we’ll look it up for you.

Setting & Installation

Who Sets the Stone at Rose Hills

How It Works

What we handle: Design, engraving, and delivery. We check with the cemetery for the requirements at your loved one’s exact section, submit your design for the cemetery’s approval, coordinate the delivery schedule with our production timing, and bring the finished memorial to the park on the scheduled day.

Who sets the marker: Like most Southern California cemeteries, Rose Hills handles the actual setting of the memorial themselves. Outside companies deliver but are not permitted to install on the grounds.

Common Questions

What Families Ask About Rose Hills

How long does it take to get a headstone made and set at Rose Hills?

Most flat markers are ready in 2–6 weeks after the design is approved. Upright monuments and granite benches typically take 6–8 weeks. After we deliver to Rose Hills, the cemetery’s grounds crew usually sets the marker within 2–3 weeks.

Can I have an upright monument at Rose Hills?

Some sections of Rose Hills permit upright granite monuments, including Family Estates. Most lawn sections, however, require flat (flush) markers. The right answer depends on the specific plot. We’ll confirm what’s allowed at your section before any design work begins.

Do you handle the permit process with Rose Hills?

Yes. After 60 years of servicing Rose Hills, we know their permit and design approval process inside and out. The whole thing runs through our office: approval, revisions, delivery scheduling. No separate trip to Rose Hills on your end.

What are the setting and endowment fees at Rose Hills?

Rose Hills charges a setting fee and an endowment care fee, both billed separately from the memorial. For the baby marker (18″×9″) and single markers (24″×12″ and 28″×16″), the setting fee is $650 and endowment care is $70. For the 32″×20″, the setting fee is $650 and endowment care is $140. For companion and ledger sizes (44″×14″ and larger), the setting fee is $750 and endowment care is $140. The endowment care fund is a savings account that funds the long term care of the grounds; every cemetery in California is required by law to maintain one.

Can I add an inscription to an existing memorial at Rose Hills?

On site engraving is one of our specialties at most Southern California cemeteries, but Rose Hills handles inscriptions on existing memorials in house through their own office. To add a name, date, or inscription to a memorial already at Rose Hills, contact the Rose Hills office directly at (562) 699-0921.
