Founded on June 9, 1884, when Los Angeles was a city of about 28,000, as the first cemetery in town open to people of all races and creeds.
Angelus-Rosedale covers 65 acres between Washington and Venice Boulevards, its lawns lined with Victorian era monuments. The first crematory in the American West opened here in 1887, only the second in the country, and in 1993 the cemetery joined Angelus Funeral Home, the pioneering Black owned funeral home whose name it now carries. Hattie McDaniel, the first Black performer to win an Academy Award, is buried here, along with actress Anna May Wong and jazz musician Eric Dolphy.
