What’s Allowed at Artesia Cemetery
Artesia Cemetery permits both flat granite markers and upright monuments, though uprights are limited to Tier 1, the cemetery’s designated front section. Flat markers must include either a 2-inch sanded border or a lawn mower protection (LMP) edge; we build every flat marker here with the standard 2-inch sanded border, with LMP available as a paid upgrade. Markers may be granite or bronze, one marker per grave (up to three smaller markers per grave where sizing allows), and every headstone must be authorized by the District before it’s built.

The standard flat marker for a single adult grave, VJ’s most common size at Artesia.

Who Sets the Stone at Artesia Cemetery
What we handle: Design, engraving, and delivery. We complete Artesia’s Headstone/Marker Authorization Form and coordinate with the District office before any work begins, so your marker is approved and ready when it’s time to set.
Who sets the marker: Artesia Cemetery District’s own crew sets every marker. Installation by anyone else isn’t permitted.
What Families Ask About Artesia Cemetery
How long does it take to get a headstone made and set at Artesia Cemetery?
In-stock flat markers are ready in 2–4 weeks; upright monuments may take a bit longer. Special orders may take longer too; we’ll let you know up front. Artesia requires every headstone be placed within six months of burial, and the District’s own crew handles the setting once your marker is approved.
What are the setting fees at Artesia Cemetery?
Artesia Cemetery District’s setting fee depends on the type and size of marker: from $350 for a flat cremation or infant marker up to $1,200 for the largest upright monument. Why can’t I buy the headstone from the cemetery?
Artesia Cemetery is a public cemetery district, and California law prohibits public cemeteries from selling memorials. Families buy the marker from a monument company like ours, and the District installs it for a setting fee.
Are upright monuments allowed anywhere at Artesia Cemetery?
No. Upright monuments are permitted only in Tier 1, the cemetery’s designated front section. We’ll confirm your family’s plot qualifies before any design work begins.
Do you handle the approval process with Artesia Cemetery?
Yes. Everything goes through our office. You approve the design proof, we take it from there: completing the District’s Authorization Form, size verification, and delivery coordination. No separate calls to the District on your end.
Can I add an inscription to an existing memorial at Artesia Cemetery?
Yes. We add inscriptions to existing memorials on site at Artesia Cemetery. We bring our portable engraving equipment right to the gravesite, so there’s no need to disturb the memorial or coordinate a removal. One of Los Angeles County’s Oldest Cemeteries
Established as a public cemetery district in 1928, after decades as one of the county’s oldest privately run burial grounds.
Artesia Cemetery’s earliest recorded burials date back to the 1860s, when it was privately owned and served the area’s early Los Angeles County pioneers and settlers. On September 24, 1928, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors converted the cemetery into the Artesia Cemetery District, a public special district governed by a Board of Trustees appointed to four-year terms. Today the 14-acre cemetery remains one of the county’s oldest and most established.
Families from across southeast Los Angeles County use Artesia Cemetery, including Artesia, Cerritos, Hawaiian Gardens, and parts of Lakewood, Norwalk, and Long Beach.
