Approved Sizes and the Cemetery’s Regulations
Woodlawn Cemetery accepts flat granite markers, bronze markers and upright granite monuments. Granite markers must be 3 inches thick, and each flat marker is set with a concrete border around it. Upright monuments are allowed only on full size graves in certain sections, not on cremation, infant or child graves, and the base must match the standard marker size for that area. Infant and child markers are allowed only in certain sections.
Single Marker 24″ × 12″ × 3″
The smaller single adult marker, with room for a name, dates and a short inscription.
Single Marker 28″ × 16″ × 3″
The standard single adult marker, with room for a name, dates, inscription, and artwork such as a portrait or scene.

Companion Marker 44″ × 14″ × 3″

The marker size for Woodlawn’s cremation graves, with room for a name and dates.
Infant Marker 20″ × 10″ × 3″
The marker size for infant and child graves, allowed in certain sections only.

What Families Say About Us
What Families Ask About Woodlawn Cemetery
Do you handle everything with Woodlawn Cemetery?
Yes. We design and engrave the memorial at our Chino factory, and once you approve the design proof we take it from there: paperwork, cemetery approval, and delivery coordination. No separate calls to Woodlawn Cemetery on your end.
What are Woodlawn Cemetery’s visiting hours?
The Woodlawn Cemetery office is open Monday through Friday, 8 am to 4 pm. For holiday hours or section access questions, call the cemetery office at (310) 458-8717.
What types of memorials are allowed at Woodlawn Cemetery?
Woodlawn Cemetery allows flat granite and bronze markers, and upright granite monuments on full size graves. See the Cemetery Regulations section above for every permitted size and section rule.
Why can’t I buy the headstone from the cemetery?
Woodlawn Cemetery is owned by the City of Santa Monica, and California law prohibits public cemeteries from selling memorials. Families buy the marker from a monument company like ours, and the City installs it for a setting fee.
What are the setting fees at Woodlawn Cemetery?
The City of Santa Monica charges the setting fee, paid to the cemetery before the marker is delivered and separate from the cost of the memorial. Single, cremation and infant markers: $723.00. Companion (double wide) markers, oversize markers and upright monuments: $1,446.03. These are city fees paid to the cemetery, not to us. As of July 1, 2026.
Who installs the marker at Woodlawn Cemetery?
Woodlawn Cemetery’s own grounds crew. We deliver the finished memorial to the cemetery, and their team sets flat markers level with the ground. For upright monuments, the cemetery builds the foundation and we help their crew set the monument. The setting fee covers this installation.
How long does it take to get a headstone made and set at Woodlawn Cemetery?
In-stock flat markers are ready in 2–4 weeks. Special orders may take longer; we’ll let you know up front. Once delivered to Woodlawn Cemetery, the marker is set the same day.
Can I add an inscription to an existing memorial at Woodlawn Cemetery?
Yes. We add inscriptions to existing memorials on site at Woodlawn Cemetery. We bring our portable engraving equipment right to the gravesite, so there’s no need to disturb the memorial or coordinate a removal. Adding a second name, a death date, or a short inscription typically takes a couple of hours on site. Learn more about on-site engraving →
